J. Edgar Hoover declines post of baseball commissioner
FBI director J. Edgar Hoover declines post of baseball commissioner.

J.Edgar Hoover's tenure as Director of the FBI began in 1924.  Hoover established strict guidelines for the agency, created a centralized fingerprint file, established a crime laboratory, and founded the National Police Academy. His focus on organized crime in the 1930s gave the FBI heroic stature, but later campaigns against alleged Communists and other political groups tarnished their reputation.

Despite being offered numerous other posts, which he always declined, Hoover remained the agency's director until his death in 1972, making him the longest-serving leader of an executive branch agency. Today the FBI director is limited to a ten-year term.
