The Hydrogen Bomb
Edward
Teller and Stanislaw Ulam submit a classified paper at the Los Alamos lab, in
which they proposed their revolutionary new design, staged implosion, for a
practical megaton-range hydrogen bomb.
There
has been a lot written about the developments that led to the Teller-Ulam, design in the spring of 1951. The result of all this, though, was a report signed by
Teller and Ulam titled “On Heterocatalytic Detonations I. Hydrodynamic Lenses
and Radiation Mirrors,” report # LAMS-1225, dated March 9, 1951.
It’s
a 20 page document, and there were 20 copies made. Four of those were sent to
DC; 14 of them kept at Los Alamos; and one of them was given to J. Robert
Oppenheimer directly.
