Swimming Pools Desegregated in St. Louis
The city of St. Louis, Missouri, was ordered by a federal
judge to desegregate all of its municipal swimming pools within two days,
ending the status quo of separate swimming facilities for White and
African-American people. In 1949, the city had closed all of its pools for the
summer rather than allow blacks to swim in "whites only" pools.
