First
Helicopter to Fly over the Alps
For the first time, a
helicopter was able to fly up and over the Alps mountain range, with a Bell 47
functioning at sufficient altitude in the thinner air.
The Alps are the highest and
most extensive mountain range system that lies entirely in Europe, stretching
approximately 750 miles across eight Alpine countries: Austria, France,
Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Slovenia, and Switzerland.
The Bell 47 is a two-bladed,
single engine, light helicopter manufactured by Bell Helicopter. Based on the
third Model 30 prototype, Bell's first helicopter designed by Arthur M. Young,
the Bell 47 became the first helicopter certified for civilian use on 8 March
