First
Ship sails around North America
St.
Roch, the first ship to make a circumnavigation
North America, arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia,
from where it had started on July 15, 1944. The ship traversed the Northwest
Passage and the Panama Canal in a voyage of more than 15,000 miles. Although
the actual sailing time was only 137 days, the ship, owned by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, had
layovers throughout the Arctic portion of the trip to bring supplies to remote
RCMP outposts.
