Duck and Cover
"Duck
and cover" is a method of personal protection against the effects of a
nuclear explosion. In the most literal interpretation, the focus of the
maneuver is primarily on protective actions one can take during the first few
crucial seconds-to-minutes after the event.
Some
historians have sought to dismiss civil defense advice as mere propaganda,
despite, as other historians have found, detailed scientific research programs
laying behind the much-mocked government civil defense pamphlets of the 1950s
and 1960s, including the prompt advice of ducking and covering.
In
U.S. Army training, soldiers are taught to fall immediately down, covering face
and hands in much the same way as is described by the advice to duck and cover
