Ralph Bunche wins Nobel
Prize
Ralph Johnson Bunche an
American political scientist, academic, and diplomat who received the 1950
Nobel Peace Prize for his late 1940s mediation in Israel.He was the first
African American and the first American person of color to be so honored in the
history of the prize. He was involved in the formation and administration of
the United Nations. In 1963, he was awarded the Medal of Freedom by President
John F. Kennedy.
Beginning in 1947, Bunche
was involved with trying to resolve the Arab-Israeli conflict. He served as
assistant to the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine. In September 1948, Bunche became the UN's
chief mediator. The representative for
Israel was Moshe Dayan.

Armistice Agreements, (The 1949 Armistice Agreements are a set of agreements
signed during 1949 between Israel and neighboring Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, and
Syria. The agreements ended the official hostilities of the 1948 Arab–Israeli
War, and established Armistice Demarcation Lines between Israeli forces and
Jordanian-Iraqi forces, also known as the Green Line.) Dr.
