Jo Marie Payton (born
August 3, 1950) is an American television actress, and singer, who starred most
notably as Harriette Winslow, the matriarch of the Winslow family on the ABC/CBS sitcom, Family
Matters, and its parent series Perfect Strangers from 1989 until
1997. From 2001 to 2005 Jo Marie Payton provided the voice for Suga Mama Proud
on Bruce
W. Smith's The Proud Family, which reunited her with her
former co-star Orlando Brown. The role earned her an NAACP Image Award
nomination in 2005.
Having run for nine seasons, Family Matters is the
second longest-running U.S. sitcom with a predominantly African American cast
behind The Jeffersons, which aired for 11 seasons. In
terms of the number of episodes, Family Matters is ranked third after Tyler Perry's House of Payne (254)
and The Jeffersons (253), with 215.
