Mental
Patient responsible for Hartford Circus Fire
Robert Dale Segee, a patient in a mental institution and
former circus worker, confessed to the Ohio State Fire Marshal as having been
the person who caused the Hartford circus fire, which killed 167 people.
The Hartford circus fire, which occurred on July 6, 1944, in Hartford, Connecticut, was one of the worst
fire disasters in the history of the United
States. The fire occurred during an afternoon performance of the Ringling Brothers and
Barnum & Bailey Circus that was attended by 6,000 to 8,000 people. In
addition to people that died, more than
700 were injured. Segee would later recant
the confession, and in 1993, a Connecticut State Police investigation would
conclude that the blaze had been started by accident
