Agent Decapitated In Tibet
Douglas S. McKiernan became the first CIA agent to be
killed in the course of a mission, after he was mistakenly shot by Tibetan
border guards while trying to cross into India. Killed along with McKiernan
were two Belarusan guides, Stephani Yanuishkin and Leonid Shutov, and all three
were decapitated after their deaths. A group of couriers from the Dalai Lama,
who were supposed to inform the border guards that the Americans and Belarusans
were to be given safe passage, had been five days too late in delivering the
message
